Joel attended Humble High School, a public high school in a city in Texas, and graduated in 1981. He proceeded to study Radio and Television Communication at Oral Roberts University in Tusla, Oklahoma. He did not graduate from the institution as he quit.

It was in 1982 he returned to Houston and founded the Lakewood Television show where He worked alongside his father as the publishing supervisor of their local Houston ministry show. He produced his father’s televised messages until 1999 (when his father unexpectedly died from a heart attack). He succeeded him on 3rd October 1999.
Osteen never had formal religious training or received any divinity degree. By fall 2004, Lakewood was holding six weekly services in a 7,800 seat sanctuary, embracing the slogan “Discover the Champion in You”. He is connected with the Word of faith movement in charismatic Protestantism.
Osteen’s appealing kind of messages led to the book, Your Best Life Now: 7 Steps to Living at Your Full Potential, in October of 2004. It was his first book and it swiftly advanced up the New York Times best-seller list in November and earned the notable credits of becoming the fastest-selling nonfiction book in publishing history.

In 2005, Osteen’s Lakewood Church moved into the Compaq Center, the former home arena of the Houston Rockets which became their new meeting-house. His organization negotiated quite a tough sale on that with the municipal authorities, and then went on to spend more than $90 million to renovate it into the 16,000-seat church we now know.
He married Victoria Osteen, who became co-pastor of Lakewood Church, in 1987. The couple has two children (Jonathan and Alexandra Osteen).
In 2017, Osteen’s net worth was variably reported to be $40 million and $60 million. He and his family live in a 17,000 square-foot mansion in River Oaks, which has an estimated value of $10.5 million. Osteen claims that as senior pastor, he collects no salary from the church, which has an annual budget of $70 million. He said that he instead depends on income from his book sales.
